MOVIE INFORMATION(RELEASING DATE):

Title: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

Directed By: David Yates

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Evanna Lynch, Warwick Davis, John Hurt, Helena Bonham Carter, Jason Isaacs, Helen McCrory, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis, Devon Murray, Bonnie Wright, Maggie Smith, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters, Mark Williams, Oliver Phelps, James Phelps, Gary Oldman, Robbie Coltrane

After ten years and seven films, it’s a near impossible task to wrap up the Harry Potter franchise. As someone who’s never read the books, I sat down for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 expecting to say goodbye to the gang in their graves or living happily ever after. Ultimately, the piece does find an appropriate spot on that spectrum, making for a great series conclusion. Then again, that’s great as compared to something that I hoped would be excellent – just short of excellent that is.

Harry, Ron and Hermione (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson) are back and in the midst of their Horcrux hunt. With Griphook (Warwick Davis) the goblin’s reluctant assistance, the trio infiltrates Bellatrix Lestrange’s (Helena Bonham Carter) vault at Gringotts where they suspect yet another Horcrux containing a piece of Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) soul hides. From there, it’s on to track down and destroy the remaining items, both of which are suspected to be at Hogwarts.

The trio arrives back at school to find Snape (Alan Rickman) has assumed the late Albus Dumbledore’s (Michael Gambon) position. Once Harry arrives, Professor McGonagall (Maggie Smith), Neville (Matthew Lewis), Ginny (Bonnie Wright) and all of his old Hogwarts pals abandon their efforts to simply submit to their new headmaster’s oppressive regime and join Harry to fight back. Soon thereafter, Voldemort arrives, massive army in tow, and the Battle of Hogwarts begins.

The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 gets off to a slow start, but in a beautiful way. Rather than beginning with a scene driven by magical action we get two very somber and very authentic conversations, one between Harry and Griphook and the other with Ollivander (John Hurt) of Ollivander’s Wand Shop. Sure, sparks don’t literally fly in either, but these are two moments that pack an impeccable amount of power courtesy of noteworthy performances.

From there, it’s back to the action as Harry, Ron, Hermione and Griphook execute their plan to snag the Horcrux from Bellatrix’s vault. Sure, the moment is packed with some glorious CGI and an amusing performance from Bonham Carter, as Hermione is posing as Bellatrix as part of the plan, but otherwise, the sequence comes across as a mere stepping stone to get to the good stuff – the Battle of Hogwarts.

Once the stars are back at school, that’s when things pick up, big time. In fact from that point on, the action is rather relentless in the best way possible. There are quite a handful of impressive action sequences including one during which Ron, Hermione and Harry desperately try to escape a raging fire and a bridge collapse courtesy of Seamus’ (Devon Murray) pyrotechnic skills. Thanks to so many years of character development, these moments come to mean much more than a stellar showing of CGI as there’s something incredibly rousing about seeing the gang stand up and fight.

It’s exceedingly rewarding to see Professor McGonagall do some major damage, and enjoy it, after so many years of keeping a low profile. And while we did see Neville join in on the action in past films, this one in particular showcases what he’s capable of and lets him have some fun while doing it. Without spoiling anything, the Malfoys, manage to leave one heck of a mark before the series concludes as well.

But, of course, the stars of the film are Harry, Ron, Hermione and Voldemort, and even after all of these years, there’s still room to make strides and all four actors seize the opportunity. With the help of an ever-growing story, Radcliffe, Watson, Grint and Fiennes continue to unveil new elements of their characters while keeping in tact everything they’ve established over the past seven films, making their changes all the more powerful. Even after butting heads in the past, Ron and Hermione deliver an entirely digestible romantic connection while never taking it out of the confines of the grander event. As for Voldemort, Fiennes makes him as threatening as ever while still suggesting his existence is weakening. Harry is forced to recognize a disturbing truth that Radcliffe manages with grace, successfully conveying the impact of the news as well as its potential repercussions, significantly increasing the tension.

While Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’s certainly concluded the series on a high note, it does come with two drawbacks; it’s rather confusing for folks who haven’t read the books and the emotion could have been taken a bit further. As for the first point, Part 2 reveals quite a bit of information that has a great effect on just about everything we’ve experienced since the first film hit on November 16th 2001. It’s a lot to digest, especially while so much is happening in the immediate moment. Speaking of the current situation, there are also a few issues here that aren’t as clear as they could be. One specific instance comes to mind that could throw a viewer’s perception of the plot off entirely courtesy of a semi- unintelligible line of dialogue.

Lastly, perhaps hopes were just too high, but overall, the film wasn’t as rousing as suspected. Sure, you’ll feel sad when characters meet their demise, but at this point, an occurrence of that nature should at least cause you to well up rather than emit a simple sigh. This isn’t a time to shy away from death and destruction for the sake of a few quick laughs, rather to pack on the melodrama, as these people we’ve grown to know and love deserve that kind of emotional reaction.

Regardless, like the other seven films of the franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is an incredibly well made film and enjoyable production. While it’s certainly worthy of capping off this wildly successful series, it does fall slightly short of being completely satisfying. Then again, this is a decade’s worth of material here, so the fact that it’s fulfilling in the least is an outstanding and praiseworthy accomplishment.

It doesn't open for another two days, but according to Deadline the final chapter of the Harry Potter saga already has record-breaking box office numbers.

Right now, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 accounts for 91% of Fandango's daily ticket sales, and the 3-D ticket sales alone have the highest ticket sales of any movie on Fandango for this year. This means, that just the 3-D sales have already beat out the pre- and post-release Fandango ticket sales for The Hangover Part II, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon with 48 hours to go until the official release.

Deathly Hallows: Part 2 will be shown 4,375 theaters, on 11,000 screens. 3-D screenings will be at 3,000 locations, a motion picture industry record, and on 4,250 screens. The total theaters also include 274 IMAX venues and another 120 with Premium Large Format cinemas. There will also be 270 drive-ins showing the final Harry Potter movie, another industry record. Dhobi Ghat (2011): Movie Review UPCOMING MOVIE DHOBI GHAT REVIEW

By Taran Adarsh, January 18

Irrespective of its genre, an Aamir Khan production is looked forward to with super-enthusiasm. Films like LAGAAN, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, JAANE TU YA JAANE NA and PEEPLI [LIVE] have redefined cinema and in their own small way prompted film-makers to think beyond the stereotype. That automatically raises the bar for AKP’s new endeavor DHOBI GHAT.

Mumbai – this vivacious, lively and spirited city has inspired many a film-maker, novelist, writer, playwright, poet in the past. Kiran Rao’s DHOBI GHAT takes a look at four different characters in this dynamic city. Interestingly, instead of opting for the usual candy floss entertainer in her directorial debut, Kiran chooses to make a film that’s very real and also that comes across as personal memoirs that have found a place on celluloid. It’s more of a video diary on the inhabitants of this bustling metropolis. More importantly, this is a story about four different people – all from diverse walks of life – and how their lives crisscross in this voyage and how they cope with yearning, solitude, affection, friendship and loss.

To me, Mumbai comes across as the fifth character in this film. The constant clamor of traffic, the sea of people, the energetic street life and the heavy and torrential rains dominate the goings-on from start to end. In fact, Mumbai comes across as a silent spectator here, watching each of those four characters mutely. Much like a septuagenarian [Aamir Khan's neighbor] in the film.

What catches one’s attention is the fact that DHOBI GHAT tells four different stories in those 95 minutes in the most pragmatic manner. The characters are real and so are their stories, their emotions, their relationships, their smiles, their tears, their dreams, their desires, their fears and their tragedies. It comes across as factual and authentic as your eyes would observe and witness in real life. Sure, we got a flash of the assorted people of this city in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, butDHOBI GHAT doesn’t follow the conventional route. It is far more subtle and restrained.

DHOBI GHAT [Mumbai Diaries] is the story of four people from very different backgrounds, whose worlds intersect and leave them forever altered. As they find themselves drawn into compelling relationships, the city finds its way into the crevices of their lives, separating them even as it brings them closer…

Fragments of their experience — seen through a naive video diary, black and white photographic images and painting — form a portrait of Mumbai and its people bound together as they journey through longing, loneliness, loss and love.

Like I pointed out earlier, Kiran Rao encompasses emotions, dreams and aspirations most convincingly. In fact, every sequence ofDHOBI GHAT tells a story, every image matters and that, in my opinion, makes this first attempt by Kiran nothing short of an achievement. Filmed in guerrilla style, with hand-held cameras and moving shots,DHOBI GHAT captures the real flavor of this populous city. Generally, film-makers try to stick to the right frames and procure permissions for the most eye-catching location, but not here. From opulent and classy apartments to the slums,DHOBI GHAT is an authentic piece of work.

DHOBI GHAT catapults Kiran Rao alongside the likes of accomplished storytellers like Mira Nair and Deepa Mehta with her intensely intelligent script. Besides throwing light on the daily routine of these characters,DHOBI GHAT juggles a recent past and the present time skillfully. Also, this one’s a love story inherently; not a triangle, but a square. In fact, each of the characters is vividly sketched and each of them long or aspire for that someone special. Thanks to a watertight screenplay and eye for detail, Kiran’s characters feel, look and sound genuine.

Cinematographer Tushar Kanti Ray shoots the film as if one were watching the story unspool live in front of one’s own eyes. Academy Award winning Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla’s [BROKEBACK MOUTAIN, BABEL] background score is captivating, also non-Indian, yet fits the varied moods, from melancholy to elation, admirably. The sole area where the film fumbles is its pacing at places. The results would’ve been even more impactful if the film was tightened a bit on the editing table.

The film marks the debut of Monica Dogra and Kriti Malhotra, who are exceptional and deliver natural performances. As for Prateik, the ease with which he speaks the slum lingo or converses with his pal or the gentle tone while speaking to the woman he loves [the urbane and classy Shai] proves what a dependable actor he is. The most memorable sequence for me is the concluding one when Prateik chases Shai’s car. There’s no doubt that he’s a complete scene-stealer and a star in the making. His unconventional looks and captivating personality only adds to this performance.

Very much like his performance in TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, Aamir Khan very willingly lets his co-actors eclipse him. Sure, he’s super as a cloistered artist, but this film is not about Aamir Khan, the superstar. It’s primarily about four stories, with Aamir merely enacting one of the four pivotal characters. In fact, he underplays his part magnificently and munificently allows his fellow cast to be conspicuous in their respective parts. In actuality, not many actors in moviedom would dare to even think that way!

Kittu Gidwani is alright. The actor enacting the role of Prateik’s friend does a fine job.

On the whole, DHOBI GHAT is an imposing and vibrant cinematic portrait, appending itself to the new wave of independent Indian cinema which I am extremely pleased to applaud. It is art house cinema with European sensibilities, embellished with a well thought out story that’s devoid of cliches. This ingenious motion picture caters more to the intelligentsia and connoisseurs of world cinema and will therefore garner more patronage and benefaction from the metropolitan audience in India chiefly and global spectators predominantly.
